What We Talked About
Dostana is a chaotic, sun-drenched rom-com where two straight men pretend to be gay so they can live with Priyanka Chopra — and then accidentally become the most convincing couple in the movie. It’s glossy, horny, and surprisingly progressive for 2008.
We went in expecting cringe and came out charmed. “Softcore porn for guys and girls,” Adam said, and yeah — between John Abraham’s golden swimsuit and the endless slow-mo, it’s basically a thirst trap with a plot. Nicky admitted, “I turned gay for like two hours watching this movie.”
But beneath the abs and jokes, Dostana actually does something rare: it makes space for queerness in a mainstream Bollywood film without turning it into pure punchline. Winnie put it best: “For not being gay, it was still just very gay.” And we meant that as a compliment.
There’s a romantic dinner, cuddling during Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, and a whole montage of the guys bonding like they’re in a real relationship. Khilli pointed out, “They had more chemistry with each other than with anyone else in the movie.” And she’s right — Priyanka Chopra ends up more of a plot device than a love interest.
We also talked about how the film aged. Winnie brought up a 2016 quote from the director acknowledging the criticism: “People criticized me for stereotyping homosexuality in Dostana.” But honestly, we felt it held up better than expected. It doesn’t mock gayness — it plays with it, but never punches down.
And it looks great doing it. “There’s a lot of style to it. Every shot you see,” Nicky said. From the Miami setting to the fashion, the movie is pure Karan Johar fantasy. And somehow, it still feels fun and fresh.
